The Agios Mamas wetland in Halkidiki offers an impressive and breathtaking spectacle this year. A large flock of beautiful, pink flamingos has made its usual stop in the area, as they are on their long migration journey to warmer climes, just before the arrival of winter.

The Agios Mamas lagoon wetland, located between the Kassandra and Sithonia peninsulas, is one of the most important resting and feeding stations for hundreds of species of migratory birds in Northern Greece. This particular area, included in the Natura 2000 network, offers the flamingos the ideal environment to rest and feed, thanks to its shallow, salty waters that are rich in microorganisms and shrimps, from which these beautiful birds get their characteristic pink color.

Flamingos, with their long, slender legs and “S”-shaped necks, create a stunning image as they stand serenely in the waters of the lagoon. Visitors and birdwatchers have the opportunity to observe from a distance their elegant movements and social behavior, as they interact with each other, creating a living painting against the backdrop of the serene landscape of Halkidiki.

Their presence in Agios Mamas is not only a beautiful natural phenomenon, but also an important indicator of the health of the local ecosystem. This temporary hospitality is a reminder of the need to protect these precious wetlands, which are vital for the survival of many species and the preservation of biodiversity. As the flamingos will soon continue their journey to the warmer South, they leave behind an unforgettable image and the promise of their return next year.
